Enjoy 10 days exploring the best of the big game country of Zimbabwe and Botswana. On this luxury lodge safari you will visit the best of Zimbabwe’s pristine wilderness areas, including the famed Victoria Falls, and then move to Botswana, arguably the greatest safari destination in Africa. Each lodge offers unparalleled comfort, the best locations for wildlife encounters, and exclusive, limited numbers of guests.
Day 1 – 3: HWANGE NATIONAL PARK, ZIMBABWE (Somalisa Camp)
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s biggest reserve, home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffe, lion, zebra, a huge elephant population, and a population of wild dogs thought to be among the most sizeable surviving groups on the continent. Terrain ranges from desert dunes and savannah, to rocky outcrops and sparse forests. You’ll have the choice of game drives, guided walks or horseback safaris.
On arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport, you will be met and transferred by road to Hwange National Park and Somalisa Camp. Somalisa is set in the heart of Hwange National Park, and is known for its big elephant herds. Nestled in a remote location, on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breathtaking views of savannah plains. Recently re-built, Somalisa Camp has upgraded its level of accommodation to that of utter comfort and luxury, with absolute focus on customer service.
Consisting of seven elegantly furnished ‘sail tents’ with gauze sliding doors, a glass wood-burner fireplace for the cold winter nights, and an overhead fan for the hot summer days, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities, including flush toilets, an indoor and outdoor shower, and copper slipper-style bathtub. The main decking area includes split level decking with a separate lounge and dining area, as well as a small splash pool for guests overlooking the natural waterhole where herds of game congregate to drink.
Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and knowledgeable guides, game drives and night drives.
Day 4 & 5: VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE (Victoria Falls Safari Lodge)
One of the original natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe, and is an ideal place to combine game viewing and adrenalin-surging water sports. There is excellent fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has won numerous awards of high repute, including the 2012 Top 10 Resorts & Safari Camps in Africa as voted by the distinguished international Conde Nast Traveler magazine. The lodge has also won Best Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe for an astounding 17 years in succession.
The 72-room Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has unparalleled ambience and offers sublime hospitality. With views of the waterhole and wild African bush, it’s hard to beat this prime location, and the lodge is perfectly positioned to enjoy activities above and below the Falls.
Day 6 & 7: KHWAI CONCESSION, BOTSWANA (Khwai Tented Camp)
The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season, when water is plentiful, and back to the permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the Reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession, which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.
Khwai Tented Camp has recently been relocated to a semi-permanent site on the eastern border of Moremi Game Reserve. The new exclusive location on the banks of a lagoon flowing into the Khwai River, acts as a boundary between the reserve and the community area, offering visitors staying here several unique ways to experience Africa.
Besides daytime game drives, which often feature Africa’s big players – lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe – at Khwai Tented Camp you will have the opportunity to explore the area after sunset on night drives. This activity, along with the guided walking safaris, allows an up close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and more elusive animals. The camp also provides the opportunity to explore enormous leadwood and mopane forests, as well as open grasslands and the banks of the Khwai River on foot.
The camp preserves the romance of a bygone era. There are no permanent structures; everything can be removed to leave the wilderness exactly as it was found. You will enjoy spacious and comfortable tented accommodation, and private en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and bucket showers under the African night sky.
As the Khwai is a community-run concession all proceeds from tourism go directly to help local people and local projects through the Khwai Community Trust.
Day 8 & 9: LINYANTI CONCESSION, BOTSWANA (Linyanti Bush Camp)
The Kwando-Linyanti river system is home to a series of private game reserves, known for their exotic animal species and luxury safari options. An abundance of wildlife roams freely between the variety of habitats that make up these lush, unfenced reserves.
The big game in this area increases dramatically during the dry season (June to October) when the area hosts large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, giraffe and buffalo, as well as the world’s highest density of elephant. Several packs of wild dog are found in the area and lion, leopard and cheetah are frequently sighted. Night drives allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.
Linyanti Bush Camp is an intimate 12-bed luxury tented camp situated on the banks of Linyanti Marsh, in a private reserve which borders the western boundary of Chobe. The marshes are the only water source for miles around, and attract a huge variety of wildlife, plus a large number of birds.
You will enjoy some of the most spacious and comfortable tented accommodation available. The bathrooms are private and en-suite, consisting of fixed showers, as well as a flush toilet. Activities from the camp consist of game drives, game walks, night drives, mokoro safaris, boat cruises, and fishing.
The area’s relative remoteness, and enormous variety of wildlife, makes it a favored wild safari destination, and one of the best sought after areas in Northern Botswana.
