Take a journey through South Africa’s rich history on this eight day berg and bush self-drive safari through KwaZulu-Natal. You’ll journey from the Spioenkop battlefields in the glorious Drakensberg, to the magnificent Phinda Private Game Reserve, with its seven unique habitats, bush, beach, prolific birdlife, and Big Five.

On arrival at the Durban International Airport, you will pick up your rental car and self drive to the Northern Drakensberg/Battlefields region of KwaZulu-Natal.

Your first stop after 2 – 3 hours of driving is luxurious and secluded Three Tree Hill Lodge, at Spioenkop. The lodge is surrounded by the Drakensberg Mountains, and overlooks a secluded valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve.

It is here that you will learn about the history of the second Anglo-Boer War from (1899 – 1902), with the Battle of Spioenkop being a focal point. It was a watershed event, and the longest, costliest, bloodiest, and most humiliating war that Britain fought. Excellent, charismatic guides will take you through this dramatic period in South Africa’s history.

Numerous other optional day and half day tours/activities are available: Battle of Spioenkop tour, Battle of Colenso and Churchill’s capture tour, hikes and walks in the majestic Drakensberg, San rock painting visits, horse riding, game viewing, birding, and golf.

Your stay at Three Tree Hill Lodge includes, all meals including “High Tea”, teas & coffees, and a 4 hour guided tour the Spioenkop Battlefield.

After breakfast, you will depart for the incredible Phinda Private Game Reserve in the Zululand Region of KwaZulu-Natal, known for is profuse wildlife, seven unique habitats and wide range of safari activities. Phinda is located between the sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean and the verdant waterways of the famous iSimangaliso/Greater Saint Lucia Wetland Park. Travelling time here is about 3.5 hours.

After you have checked into Phinda Forest Lodge, set in a rare sand forest, there should be enough time for a game drive. Phinda offers the Big Five, incredible bird life, and because of its close proximity to the Indian Ocean, whale shark diving and deep sea fishing. Numerous optional activities are available: Mzinene River canoeing, game drives, bush walks, boat cruises, scuba safaris, and a Zulu cultural tour.

Your stay at Phinda Forest Lodge includes: all meals, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers, teas and coffees, refreshments on game drives, laundry, safari activities, 1-hour nature walks accompanied by experienced armed trackers (subject to availability) and emergency medical evacuation insurance.

After one last morning game drive and breakfast, you will depart for Durban, and the airport (about a 4 hour drive).
