Botswana Budget Lodge Safari | Okavango Delta Mekoro excursion

A fully accommodated 14 day safari through Botswana. Experience the vast Magadikgadi pans, the Okavango Delta by traditional dug-outs and the abundant wildlife of Moremi Game Reserve. Explore Chobe National Park by boat and enjoy wonderful views of the magestic Victoria Falls!

ITINERARY

Day 1: JOHANNESBURG to KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY (Khama Chalets)
Departing Johannesburg at 06:30 we head north into Botswana and the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community-based wildlife project established to help save the vanishing rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state, and to provide economic benefits to the local Botswanan community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. This reserve situated on the Kalahari sandveld has several natural waterholes, and is the natural habitat of white rhino, zebra and wildebeest.
Included meals: lunch and dinner

Day 2: MAUN (Mochaba Crossing)
We drive through the Kalahari to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Since Maun’s founding in 1915 as the capital of the Batswana people, it has had a reputation as a hard-living frontier town, significant in the success of the local cattle ranching and safari operations. The name Maun is derived from the San word ‘maung’, which translates ‘the place of short reeds’.
Included meals: breakfast and lunch

Day 3 – 4: OKAVANGO DELTA (Mobile Tented Camp x2)
We drive into the Okavango Delta to our remote tented camp in the heart of the largest inland delta in the world. This astonishing environment has large numbers of red lechwe, buffalo, elephant and birds, namely kingfishers! A once in a lifetime experience offered in the Okavango Delta is to be poled silently along reed-lined channels in a mokoro (dug-out canoe) – sit back and relax as the water bubbles gently under the mokoro and your skilled guide points out the abundant fauna and flora.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5, 6, 7, 8: MOREMI (3x Elephant Pools Camp, 1x Mochabe Crossing)
We take an open 4WD into Moremi Game Reserve for extraordinary game viewing! Chief’s Island is the largest landmass within Moremi and was the Batswana tribe’s richest hunting ground before being declared a game reserve by the tribe. We spend 4 days on game drives watching plentiful wildlife, including elephant, hippo, buffalo, lion and many other animal species, both in Moremi Game Reserve and in private concession reserves surrounding the park. We return to Maun midday on day 8 for an evening restaurant meal (at own expense).
Included meals: breakfast x4, lunch x4, dinner x3

Day 9: MAKGADIKGADI PANS (Nata Lodge Permanent Tents)
Here there is time for an optional game flight over the Okavango before we head to Nata. The shimmering saltpans of Makgadikgadi appear as a dazzling white, endless plain. When the rain comes a dramatic change takes place as thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate to sudden grasslands, sweet and nutritious, and pink clouds of flamingo feed in the algae-rich waters. This is a low rainfall area so this spectacle only lasts a short while.
Included meals: breakfast and lunch

Day 10 – 11: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK (Thebe River Lodge)
The Chobe River is a rich and central feature of the Botswanan landscape and will be the focal point of our lodge stay. Flowing lazily along the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, the Chobe River attracts some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. An early morning 4WD game drive in the Chobe National Park and an afternoon game viewing “sundowner” cruise, allow us to see enormous elephant herds return to the Chobe River for water.
Included meals: breakfast and lunch

Day 12 – 13: VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE (Shearwater Explorers Village)
We visit “Mosi oa Tunya” or “the smoke that thunders” – the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Victoria Falls Bridge was commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900 and was completed in 1905, although Rhodes never lived to see it. It spans the impressive gorge, and the famous, adrenaline pumping Victoria Falls bungi jump is done from this bridge, with a terrifying drop of 360ft (111m). There are opportunities to white water raft on the mighty Zambezi River, bungi jump, or take a “flight of angels” (all at own expense).
Included meals: breakfast x2

Day 14: VICTORIA FALLS – TOUR ENDS
Tour ends after breakfast at 08:00.
